Search engine optimization (SEO) is vital in order for your site to rank high on the search engines. When implementing SEO techniques, here are some things to think about:
- Find the best keywords. Optimize your site with keywords that are relevant to your products and industry. When choosing a targeted keyword list, think like one of your customers: What would they type into a search engine? Keep your keywords as focused as possible. If you are selling children’s books, don’t use simply “books” as a keyword. That is highly competitive and will be difficult for you to achieve good ratings. Instead, use “children’s bedtime stories” or “books for children”.
- What are your competitors doing? Pick your top 3-5 competitors and analyze their sites to see what SEO techniques they are utilizing. Being aware of your competition online can help you implement an effective SEO strategy. Often times, you can learn a lot about your industry by studying your competitors.
- Content is king. Is your content relevant? Does your content make sense to the customer? Evaluate what you are saying on your website and make sure it is easy to read, has relevant keywords and provides a clear direction to the customer as to what they need to do.
- Tell Google what you are doing. Google allows you to submit a sitemap to them. This is extremely helpful to Google because it tells them in a clear and concise where to go to find all of the pages of your site.
- Website Statistics. Is your SEO working for you? Do you have increased website traffic? Once you implement some SEO techniques, you need to monitor your site and see if your SEO efforts are working for you. There are many website statistical packages out there, however we recommend using Google Analytics. Google Analytics is a free stats tracking package you can install on your site from Google. Once you have this data you can modify your SEO campaign moving forward.
