Online Reputation Management means being aware of what information is appears on the internet about you and your business. If something has been written about your business, it is likely accessible on the internet. Here are a few tips to help you manage this phenomenon:
  1. Google Yourself - Take the time, 5 seconds, to search your name or your business name and see what comes up. You will probably see information that you expected to be there but you may also see some that you didn’t. If you notice something you don’t want others to see or something that is incorrect, think of what your customers might think if they come across it as well. Being aware of what is out there will help you avoid any surprises from your customers and help you prepare to respond to questions that might come up.
  2. Setup Google Alerts - Google Alerts is a free service from Google that will alert has a great way of alerting you when a new item is on the web involving you or your company. Google Alerts allows you to specify keywords and will alert you when they appear on the internet. These alerts are a great way to have this information sent to you on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. http://www.google.com/alerts
  3. Update Bad Information - You can control some of the old or incorrect information that may appear on the internet. If you can correct it, do so right away. Often times information may show up on your own website, and you can edit that immediately. Some of the other information may require digging a little deeper as to who would have the ability to remove it from public view.
  4. Product / Service Review - Some sites allow customers to post product reviews. This is very popular and it gives the customer a voice. This also gives the owner a method for rebuttal or to explain things that may come up in reviews. Reviews, whether negative or positive, can help you to modify the direction you take on a product or service. It’s important to remember that your reaction – whether to a compliment or to an issue – will be in the public domain for anyone to view. Take a few moments to choose your words carefully and consider the image you want to portray.
