Glossary of Terms


Content Management Terms


CMS (Content Management System)
- Software design to allow non-technical people the ability to edit the content (text, images, files, videos, etc) of their website.

HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) - Is the language used to develop web pages on the internet. It is a system of using tags to format and structure a page that will be rendered in a web browser.

WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) - Describes the editor used in content management systems to edit content. These are designed to allow you to edit HTML without knowing the language. Most editors use an icon based system of management.


Traffic Terms


Averages pages viewed
- Is the average number of pages a visitor viewed while on your website. It is a calculation of pageviews divided by visitors.

Bounce rate - The number of people of people who come to your website and visit only a single page. The theory is that they came to your site and based on the page they saw, they decided your site was not what they were looking for and left. A lower bounce rate is better and most website range between 30%-50%.

Direct visits - The number of people who came to your website by typing your domain name directly into their browser.

Hits - The number of times a files is requested on your website. A file can be an HTML page, image, video, etc. A visitor can incur multiple "hits" by accessing just one page on your website.

New (unique) visitors - The number of unique people (based on originating IP address) who visit your website on a given day. A unique visitor can visit your website multiple times in a day and still only be counted once.

Pageviews - Counts the total number of pages viewed by visitors to your website.

Referral Visits - The number of people who were referred to your website by clicking on a link in another website.

Time spent - The amount of time in minutes that a visitor spent on your website.

Visits - The total number of times your website has been visited. A single person can visit your website multiple times in a day and result in multiple "visits".


Search Engine Terms


Alexa rank
- A system of ranking websites by the number of visitors that have visited a website. An Alexa rank of 1 indicates the most visited website on the internet. Google.com and Facebook.com go back and forth as the top website.

Bing indexed pages - The number of pages Bing (formally MSN) has included in its database (index).

Google indexed pages - The number of pages Google has included in its database (index).

Google PageRank - A link algorithm used by Google to assign a weighting to a website to measure it relative importance. Values range from 0 to 10 where 0 means a site has not be evaluated and a 10 is the most relevant. Most well structured websites rank in the 3 to 5 range.

SEO score - A scoring mechanism we use that encompasses many statistical factors like number of indexed pages, page rank and inbound links.

Yahoo indexed pages - The number of pages Yahoo has included in its database (index).


Social Networking Terms


Blogging / Blog
- A website where an author posts commentary, descriptions of events and opinions on various topic matters. Most blogs are public and can be accessed by anyone but it can also be private distributed.

Facebook - A social networking website where users can add friends and communicate with them through online messaging. Users build personal profiles to notify their friends about themselves.

LinkedIn -  A business oriented social networking website. Used mainly for professionals and job-seekers to network and build relationships online.

Twitter - A microblogging website that enabled its users to post "tweets".

Tweet - Text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length that are shared amongst a user's subscribers.
