A content management system is an easy and cost effective way to update and maintain your website on your own. Chad Allan wants to help you understand what a content management system (CMS) is so you can choose the right one.
1. CMS allows you to update MOST of your site. Many people think that with a CMS you can manipulate every aspect of your website. It is important to focus on the “content” in the name of the tool. Most CMS solutions will give you the ability to change all content related areas in the site. When it comes to site design elements as well as the main navigation, those are most often “locked into place”. When choosing a CMS for your website, be sure to ask about all the areas you’ll want to have access to for editing purposes.
2. The goal of a CMS is to empower you and your team to make updates and changes to your site. A good CMS should give you all the tools you need to do this, however there will be times when you need help. Be sure to research the support and training available for any CMS you are considering.
3. Typically a CMS comes with a set of tools for you to use. What happens if you want to add to it. After you have used your CMS a few months, you may find that you require additional functionality to meet your needs. Some CMS solutions come as a fixed set of tools and the cost to add to them can be high. Be sure that you acquire a flexible CMS that doesn’t have to be recreated each time you need something added to it. Look for CMS solutions that allow you to easily add more tools as well as receive any updates that the provider may make to the program.
